(French, lever, to rise). An embankment beside a stream to prevent overflow; a steep, natural bank of earth.. (The term has been subsequently extended to all banks used as wharves, like the famous levee of New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.)

The dike had broke up there, and, oh, my, just washing the city out. And I would give it all the juice that I could, and finally down across the alleys and through the places. And I got there close to where the old levee was, the water pouring through.
