A shallow place in a stream, river etc. that can be crossed by walking, riding on horseback or in an automobile. To "ford" is to cross by any of these methods.

And as they wandered on, I can see them leaving the mountains and go to the west slopes. They followed the slopes down to the Tigris River, and there they follow the mighty Tigris on down till they come into Babylon, crossed the ford at Euphrates, on down, and skirted the lands of Palestine.
